Summertime Opportunity at Kitsumkalum Community Garden
Are you passionate about growing food and supporting your community?
We’re looking for youth still in high school that would like to learn how to grow their own food, or a community member that intends on assisting the creation and delivery of the Kitsumkalum Food Security Program. An interest in creating micro farms, working a food production farm, or generally interested in growing food, this could be what you’re looking for.
Summer/Early Fall 2025
- Starting June 23rd for available people and July 2 or July 7th for students
- Students last day of work provided is Aug 29th, 2025
- Adults last day of work provided is September 30th, 2025
Work Hours:
- 09:00 – 15:00, 5 days per week until school is out with a 30-minute lunch from 12:00 – 12:30.
- 08:00 – 16:00, 5 days per week, with 1 hour off for lunch from 12:00 – 13:00. (35-hour work week)
- High school students: These work hours may count toward graduation credits. If interested, be sure to declare your participation through your school.
Job Duties:
- Plant vegetables, weed gardens/farm beds, transplant, harvest, clean and distribute produce.
- Construction of garden boxes and greenhouses in the village.
- Construction of the village produce, and poultry farms.
- Participating in weekly scheduled garden work at various locations:
- Mondays at the garden at Na Aksa Gyilak’yoo School and Kitsumkalum
- Tuesdays at Kitsumkalum’s plot on Farmer Cam’s land
- Wednesdays at the Community Garden and crop sharing with Ksan
- Thursdays working in teams across Kitsumkalum’s multiple plots
- Fridays at Kitsumkalum’s plot at K5t
- Implement soil health practices, such as composting, manure and mulching.
- Collect refuse, turn compost, and remove invasive species.
- Perform grounds keeping tasks, including lawn care, tool maintenance, and upkeep of garden
- Maintain water collection tanks and systems.
- Taking on other tasks as needed to support the program.
This is a Grants Funded Program. All training is provided towards a successful summer of employment.
