Meet the Kitsumkalum Sm'algya̱x Team

Dm Syl Haatk Gyibaaw

Dm Syl Haatk Gyibaaw (Emily Bryant) is a dedicated advocate for Indigenous Language Revitalization and rematriation, with a deep rooted passion for Sm’algyax and her community. She has been the Team Lead of Kitsumkalum Sm’algyax since 2002; her crest is Laxgyibuu and she livves and has dedicated five years to passionately learn the language of her ancestors and people through the Mentor Apprentice Program (MAP).

Dekhāmā

Dekhāmā (Kimberly Godfrey) is our Sm’algyax Assistant Team Lead who is passionate about learning and advocating for Indigenous language and culture. She joined the Kitsumkalum Sm’algyax Team in April 2024, and is deeply rooted in community, culture, language and ceremony. Dekhama is matrilineally Tahltan, her crest is Tsesk’iye, her clan is Tehkache and materally Gitxan from her grandfather. Alongside Sm’algyax, she is learning Sim Algyax, referred to as Gitxsanimx, which was her great grandmother’s first language.

Ama Goodm Laxsüülda

Ama Goodm Laxsüülda (Ocean-Lynn Georgelin) is a member of the Raven Clan and lives on Ts’msyen territory near her community. She grew up hearing traditional stories shared with her by her mother and community elders. As a young adult, she has chosen to immerse herself in Sm’algyax (Ts’msyen language), storytelling and teaching.

Ksm Ganhada

Ksm Ganhada (Lisa Deptuck) is our Sm’algyax Coordinator who is journeying through Sm’algyax since 2022. She lives, works, plays on the lək̓ʷəŋən territory. Her unique perspective, bledning both remote and urban experiences, has shown us all that it is possible to reconnect with and learn Sm’algyax even far from home and community. Originally from Kitsumkalum, Ksm carries her Ganhada crest with pride. Her first teacher was her grandmother, Adeline Roper (Tootsie), who passed down what she could to her daughter and granddaughters.

Maadm Gyeks

Maadm Gyeks (Annika Bryant) is our Sm’algyax Assistant. She joined the Sm’algyax Team in 2023, her clan is Laxgyibuu adn she lives and works in her community of Kitsumkalum. A proud graduate of ‘Na Aksa Gyilak’yoo School (NAGKS), she recieved the Cultural Ambassador Award for 2018/2019 and began her journey in Sm’algyax in 2023 and is driven by her dream to speak it fluently.
