BC Canada: Flood Warning and Advisory Notifications

High Streamflow Advisory: River levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

High Streamflow Advisory Issued by the River Forecast Centre

Areas Affected:

  • Boundary Range (north to Tahltan and Telegraph Creek), including the lower Stikine River, Iskut River, and nearby tributaries
  • North Coast, including smaller streams around Stewart, Gitlax̱t’aamiks (New Aiyansh), Terrace, Prince Rupert, Kitimat, and nearby communities
  • Central Coast, including streams near Bella Coola, Rivers Inlet, and other coastal communities

Weather Overview:

  • A series of fall storms are bringing heavy rain to the coast.
  • From Sept 19–20, some areas received 80–100 mm of rain.
  • Another storm is expected on Monday (Sept 22) with 50–90 mm of rain in many areas and possibly over 150 mm in some spots.
  • This storm may also affect the Boundary Range area, especially on the BC side.

River Conditions:

  • Rivers are rising after a dry summer and recent heavy rain.
  • Smaller streams, which react quickly to rain, may see sharp increases in flow.
  • High water levels are expected to continue rising into early next week.
  • Activities like fishing, hunting, and recreation near rivers may be more dangerous right now.
  • Fast-moving water poses serious safety risks, especially in smaller, ungauged streams.

Stay Safe:

  • Be cautious around rivers and streams over the coming days.
