Kitsumkalum Fisheries Knowledge Transfer Program

In 2025, it was Kitsumkalum’s goal to transfer fisheries knowledge to the community through courses such as the net mending and the jet boat safety to help prepare our members to take part in an in-river Dual Fishery. With great support from the community, we had a very successful season!

To continue this fisheries knowledge transfer, we would like to present another opportunity for 2026. Kitsumkalum has recently purchased the Miss Robbie, commercial fishing vessel. We are in the works of setting up training courses to prepare interested members to learn how to operate this vessel and commercial fish for halibut (may be some related salmon gillnet fishing training also) in June of 2026 under the mentorship of one of our experienced commercial fishermen, Ron Bartlett. There will be four required FishSafe courses, SVOP, SDV-BS, ROC-M, and Marine Basic First Aid in Terrace BC this coming January 2026. We can take up to 15 participants for the FishSafe courses, but only four will be listed for the mentorship program to operate and commercial fish the Miss Robbie in 2026. In April 2026 there will be a four-day Dockside training program for the four participants to learn how to safely work aboard the Miss Robbie and to learn how to handle and use the fishing gear.

This is a great opportunity for our members. We are at a point where many of our commercial fishermen are retiring, it is now time to start passing this knowledge to the next generation. We thank all our commercial fishermen over the many years for helping provide our community with halibut, cod, etc. your hard work is so greatly appreciated!

To express your interest in these courses, please contact Tammy Roberts by November 24, 2025.
