Why the Survey Started
In November 2022, there was a consultation with classes and members of the wider school community to propose a new French name for Terrace School.
During a discussion in December 2023, a Kitsumkalum community partner suggested that instead of having a new name translated or given directly in the Sm’Algyax language, recognition of the territory in Sm’Algyax on our school logo would be appreciated.
We would eventually like to have a name in the local traditional language. Until this is possible, we would like to submit the formal request for a French-language name.
During the previous consultation, all names that referred to colonization were removed from the options, as were those that were not formulated to form a school name. In June 2024, in partnership with the PAC, three names emerged as favorites.
