PRINCE RUPERT: FEB. 15, 2023
10AM-2PM CREST HARBOUR VIEW ROOM

THIS PROJECT IS BEING LED BY KITSUMKALUM’S ENVIRONMENT, LANDS, AND REFERRALS
TEAM, WITH SUPPORT AND DIRECTION FROM BAND LEADERSHIP.

What is the goal of the project?
Kitsumkalum wants to understand if and how our membership is being impacted by large-scale marine shipping and increased boat traffic.

As the number of ships continues to increase, Kitsumkalum wants to understand what it’s like for community members when they are out fishing, boating, or marine harvesting.

It’s important for us to have a record of your concerns
If there are places you go that are becoming more contaminated, lack access to or need protection, we would like to record this information so we can try to help.

Similarly, if there are areas where you don’t feel safe because of large vessels, or areas where marine
traffic is too heavy, it’s important for us to have a record of your concerns.

What will the open house be like?
We will provide an informational handout at the open house
and be available to answer your questions. With your
permission, we may record your information by mapping
marine transportation routes or areas where you’ve noticed an
increase in shipping traffic or large vessels. If you provide
your consent, we may also video record a short interview with
you so that we have an accurate record of what you’ve
shared but this is completely optional and up to you.

The information you share will be held by Kitsumkalum
Environment Lands and Referrals in our confidential database
and will be used to help or conservation efforts

Any video recordings or mapped information will be saved in
the confidential database to help us understand how marine
shipping affects Kitsumkalum’s Rights, Title, and other
interests. Any information provided to outside parties will
always be anonymized and, in the case of mapped information,
buffered and generalized to protect the confidentiality of
Kitsumkalum’s land and marine use areas.

We would be happy to provide you with a copy of your
recordings, spatial data, or other information after being
recorded.
While the open house is specifically looking at travel and use on the coast, we are always willing to arrange a
time to discuss other environmental and referral topics.

While you may have shared info in the past, we are looking to add to the data we already have, reinforce stories you may have already given and continue to develop relationship with members.
