Kitsumkalum Health Centre is committed to providing quality, culturally safe, and accessible health services that honour the traditions, values, and wellness of our people. As part of our efforts to enhance healthcare delivery, in partnership with BC Ministry of Health, Northern Health Authority, and Pacific Northwest Division of Family Practice, we are seeking motivated, innovative, and flexible individuals to support the development of integrated, team-based primary care services, in partnership with our community, leadership and Nation.
The Kitsumkalum healthcare team provides a culturally-safe comprehensive approach to health and wellbeing through a continuum of care that includes, but is not limited to community-grounded Traditional Wellness practitioner, doctor and/or a nurse practitioner, kinesiologist, dietician and physical/occupational therapists. The team-based approach ensures a continuum of care model that provides immediate and ongoing access to diverse services that meet the unique needs identified by the client and their care team and brings these services closer to home.
POSITION SUMMARY:
In accordance with established vision and values of the Kitsumkalum Health Services and the Coast Mountain Primary Care Network (PCN), the position is responsible for designing, conducting and supervising physical activity sessions for individuals, families and groups as an integral member of the Kitsumkalum Health Care Team. The individual is responsible to ensure that care is provided within the context of cultural safety and meets the professional practice standards as outlined by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.
Reporting to Health Director or designate, the kinesiologist assists participants to attain recommended physical activity and lifestyle goals by providing assessment, training, education, counselling and opportunities within the context of Kitsumkalum First Nation. Additionally, the position takes a quality assurance/improvement lens in providing subject matter expertise, support and input into overall health program planning, development and evaluation.
TYPICAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Adheres to principles of Trauma Informed Practices, Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity and Belonging (EDIB) and Cultural Safety, as well as Kitsumkalum’s personnel policy, throughout all aspects of patient/client engagement
- Assess patients/clients by conducting culturally safe and client-led health screening and physical activity clearance using relevant skills, knowledge and evidence-informed tools
- Coordinates and implements best practices of individualized exercise therapy in collaboration with individual, family, and the healthcare team
- Assesses, coaches and orients patients by demonstrating exercise equipment and explaining principles of physical activity training
- Within the context of the Kitsumkalum Nation and place-based practices, conducts individual and group physical activity sessions including pre/post exercise assessments in a variety of settings including clinic, patients’ homes and community outreach
- Assesses patient/family physical, emotional, mental readiness and physical ability through methods such as physical assessment, discussions, completion of questionnaires, chart review and through collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team
- Maintains clinical records, creates reports and documents related to all aspects of clinical care
- Coordinates with the Kitsumkalum Community Health team to support integrated client care
- Uses clinical skills, expertise and judgement in all aspects of client care
- Consults with health professionals, internally and externally, to support health promotion, disease prevention and overall health management
- Effectively manages time, resources and multiple priorities to support service delivery
- Maintains appropriate documentation in the health record per organizational standards and practices as required
- Maintains workload records and metrics as required
- Shares the responsibility for the orientation of new personnel and acts as a role model
- Performs other related duties as required
REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Baccalaureate degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Human Kinetics or Exercise Sciences from a recognized program
- Certified Exercise Physiologist either with the Canadian Society for Exercise and Physiology (CSEP) or the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
- CPR Level C (minimum)
- Knowledge of the Tsimshian language and culture is an asset
- Current valid B.C. driver’s license, reliable transportation and willingness to submit a driver’s abstract
- Current criminal records check including vulnerable sector is required
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strict adherence to principles of Reconciliation, Trauma Informed Practices, Cultural Safety and EDIB
- Knowledge of primary care services, resources and pathways within the Terrace area an asset
- Ability to complete initial and ongoing assessments and utilize appropriate, therapeutic interventions
- Ability to plan, implement and evaluate safe client activity programs
- Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced healthcare environment
- Proficiency in verbal and written communication with patients, families, the public and members of the interdisciplinary team
- Ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data (from multiple sources) to problem-solve and make decisions effectively
- Data analysis skills including appropriate use of data analysis and reporting tools
- Ability to organize work, set objectives, establish priorities as well as manage time and resources
- Creative planning for change and innovation, willingness to adapt to changing program priorities and requirements, and participates in professional development of self and others
- Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and a commitment to excellence in the provision of care
- Demonstrated computer skills including the use of Electronic Medical Records and Office-based programs
- Ability to operate other related equipment as required in the specific practice area
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position
