The Kitsumkalum Economic Development Group is the economic development arm of the Kitsumkalum Band. The Kitsumkalum Economic Development Group is responsible for the development of Kitsumkalum’s land holdings and facilitates partnerships for numerous business opportunities.

The Kitsumkalum Economic Development Group’s mission is to contribute to building a vibrant community in Kitsumkalum and surrounding traditional territories through successful economic development endeavors. Kitsumkalum is a growing community that embraces smart and sustainable economic development. The Kitsumkalum Economic Development Group works to maintain and strengthen our existing business activities, identify new business opportunities to generate a profit, while maintaining Kitsumkalum’s values.

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to Board of Directors, the General Manager, Economic Development is responsible for managing and providing strategic direction to the progress of business within the band membership to provide employment opportunities and operations that generate increased revenues while ensuring environmental, economic and social sustainability to the community.

This position requires a high level of understanding of First Nation’s Aboriginal Rights and Title, cultural values, economic corporate structuring and resulting development of joint ventures partnerships, strategic planning for negotiating impact benefits and economic benefits agreements and the sensitivity of political issue relating to socio-economic development in Kitsumkalum.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the Corporation in new business ventures
  • Interact and collaborate with Executive and Council to support department goals and objectives
  • Ensure proper management is in place to oversee current and upcoming operations
  • Design and implement business strategies, plans and procedures
  • Develop high quality business strategies and plans ensuring their alignment with short-term and long-term objectives
  • Lead and motivate subordinates to advance employee engagement develop a high performing managerial team
  • Oversee all operations and business activities to ensure they produce the desired results and are consistent with the overall strategy and mission
  • Carry out appropriate due diligence and risk management to facilitate high-quality investing decisions to advance the business and increase profits
  • Enforce adherence to legal guidelines and in-house policies to maintain the company’s legality and business ethics
  • Review financial and non-financial reports to devise solutions or improvements
  • Build trust relations with key partners and stakeholders and act as a point of contact for important shareholders
  • Analyze problematic situations and occurrences and provide solutions to ensure company survival and growth

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MBA or 10 years of relevant proven experience
  • Knowledge of joint ventures partnerships
  • Proven experience in areas of business development, implementation and management
  • Experience in developing profitable strategies and implementing vision
  • Proven track record of successfully building a business that achieved strong growth in revenue and profit.
  • Strong understanding of corporate finance and performance management principles
  • Familiarity with diverse business functions such as Marketing, PR, finance etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of corporate governance and general management best practices
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with outstanding organizational and leadership skills
  • Analytical abilities and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills
  • Preferred experience or background in business development planning and start up.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Superior managerial skills combined with the ability to develop and execute plans in a leadership role are necessary. Must be adept at motivating and obtaining results, leading by example with a participatory management style, and creating a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, including the ability to interface with shareholders, senior management and the hourly work force with equal ease.
  • Ability to exercise sound business judgment with a bottom-line results orientation is necessary.
  • Must possess a strong work ethic and desire to do things better, taking responsibility for decisions and actions, and insisting upon measurable results while moving business forward.
  • Must be forward thinking, with the ability to make appropriate day-to-day decisions for the long-term benefit of the property and the company.
