On March 12, 2019, Plaintiffs in the McLean case announced a nationwide class action settlement against Canada to compensate survivors of harms suffered at federally operated Indian Day Schools. The settlement includes First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples who attended these schools. Following two years of engagement with survivors, communities, and Indigenous leaders, the settlement was designed to avoid re-traumatizing individuals, unlike the Indian Residential School Settlement. The announcement began a 60-day “notice period” where survivors could learn about the settlement and ask questions before the Settlement Approval Hearings in May.
This settlement is a critical milestone and people deserve to understand it and how it came to be. We encourage our fellow survivors to ask questions and learn the facts by reaching out directly to Class Counsel.
