High Streamflow Advisory – Skeena River
The River Forecast Centre is issuing a High Streamflow Advisory for:
- Skeena River including the mainstem from Kitwanga downstream through Usk and Terrace
Weather Synopsis:
Hot weather over the weekend has led to increased snowmelt rates in the mountain snowpack. Temperatures are easing through the middle of this week. Rain and showers are expected overnight Monday and into Tuesday.
River Conditions:
The Skeena River has been rising in response to increased snowmelt runoff. The Skeena River at Usk (Water Survey of Canada gauge 08EF001) is currently at 3220 m3/s (8.9m gauge height) and rising. Elevated flows are expected to continue into the middle of the week, with the potential to see further rises to 9.5 to 10.0 m at the Skeena River at Usk gauge.
Fast-flowing rivers pose increased risk to safety. Stay away from rivers and river banks, which can be unstable. Never drive through floodwaters, as unseen hazards and current can be life-threatening.
The River Forecast Centre continues to monitor the conditions and will provide updates as conditions warrant.

A High Streamflow Advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected. Fast-flowing bodies of water increase risk to life safety. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
A Flood Watch means that river levels are rising and will approach or may exceed bankfull. Flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur.
A Flood Warning means that river levels have exceeded bankfull or will exceed bankfull imminently, and that flooding of areas adjacent to the rivers affected will result.
