The Great British Columbia ShakeOut Earthquake Drill

ShakeOut is a great opportunity to practice the earthquake protective actions of Drop, Cover and Hold On, so people are prepared to respond quickly and safely when they feel shaking or receive an Earthquake Early Warning alert on via phone, TV or radio.
Risk in B.C.
All parts of British Columbia are at high risk for earthquakes compared to the rest of Canada. For example, on January 26, 1700, a massive magnitude 9 earthquake hit the province, shaking areas as far as Washington, Oregon, and California, and causing a large tsunami.
Why “Shake Out”?
The Great British Columbia ShakeOut is a yearly earthquake drill organized by the BC Earthquake Alliance (BCEA). It gives people, schools, and organizations a chance to practice what to do during an earthquake—like Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
Participants are also encouraged to check their emergency plans and supplies, and take steps to make their homes and workplaces safer.
The BC Earthquake Alliance (BCEA) is a non-profit group focused on helping people in B.C. prepare for earthquakes and tsunamis. For more information about the BC Earthquake Alliance, please visit bcearthquakealliance.ca.
