AltaGas – Operator Technician 4

Location: Prince Rupert, BC
Salary: $100,609.60
Schedule: 4 days on, 4 days off including both days and nights

Reporting to the Shift Supervisor, this position is responsible for safely managing the daily operations involved in
offloading Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) railcars. This position is part of the International Longshore & Warehouse
Union, Local 523B. ILWU Local 523 is located and represented within the Prince Rupert community.

The shift schedule for this position is 4 days on, 4 days off, including both days and nights.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe operation of the terminal by maintaining awareness of personal safety and that of co-workers, outside contractors, and customers, adhering to all policies, procedures, and practices
  • Recognize and avoid inappropriate risks, consider the consequences and impact, and consult with senior
    personnel before acting
  • Participate as a member of the Emergency Response Team; actively participate in emergencies (fire/spill)
    when required
  • Report and investigate facilities’ safety incidents
  • Visually inspect the railcar to be involved in the upcoming transfer to ensure that everything is
    mechanically sound and there is no defective equipment before offloading
  • Sample railcar contents and place sample in a chromatograph, record results from chromatograph, along
    with physical conditions (pressure, temperature, railcar tank level)
  • Unload railcars according to the offloading procedure
  • Check the volume of the railcar after offloading to ensure the railcar is empty
  • Complete appropriate paperwork/documentation after offloading
  • Perform track inspections and railcar inspections
  • Perform minor facility maintenance as required
  • Assist senior operators in other facility activities when there are no railcars to unload, or as instructed
  • Perform general terminal housekeeping duties (i.e. shovel snow when required, clean and organize work
    area, etc.)

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED required
  • 2+ years of experience as a railcar loader or unloader preferred
  • Gas plant and power generation experience is considered an asset
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Railcar Safety & Securement Certification and Track Inspection Level II Certification preferred
  • Must possess the physical capabilities to safely perform all essential aspects and responsibilities of the
    Terminal Operator position
  • Must possess the mechanical aptitude to capably handle the operation of terminal equipment and
    maintenance skills
  • Demonstrated safety mindset; ability to actively participate in all safety initiatives
  • Ability to participate as an active member of the Emergency Response Team
    This is a safety-sensitive position that requires the successful completion of pre-employment drug, alcohol, and
    fit-for-work testing.

About RIPET

The Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal (RIPET) is located approximately 10 km south of Prince Rupert, on
Ridley Island. The RIPET Facility receives pressurized liquid propane via rail, which is transferred to intermediate
pressurized storage bullets. The propane is then chilled and transferred to refrigerated storage at atmospheric
pressure. The cooled propane is transferred to Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC) using the existing RTI coal jetty for
transport to Asia and other markets.
