Services for Indigenous Communities

Hello,

Elections Canada is committed to reducing barriers for Indigenous electors who wish to participate in the federal electoral process. We have increased service offerings for Indigenous communities for this general election and we would greatly appreciate your help in sharing the following information with your audiences:

  • In some remote, isolated and low-density communities, many of them Indigenous, we may offer flexible advance voting services on one or more days during the election period, in addition to election day polls. Electors can find out if there will be a flexible advance poll in their community by checking their voter information card, using the Voter Information Service or contacting their local Elections Canada office.
  • Increased use of Inuit languages, Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun, in more than 30 products to be delivered in Nunavut
  • Hiring of Indigenous community relations officers who will help the local returning officer recruit, hire and train Indigenous poll workers.
  • Hiring of Indigenous Elders and youth to offer a welcoming presence and help electors navigate the voting process at the polls.
  • Following consultation with key Indigenous partners, we have revamped the Community Leader Handbook for Indigenous electors. This product is available in English and French, and we are pleased to announce that for the first time, this product will be available in multiple Indigenous languages.
  • Additionally, we are pleased to announce that the following products are also available in English, French and several Indigenous languages:

Elections Canada continues to strive to offer an election experience that is inclusive and welcoming.

We appreciate your help in sharing this information with your networks. If you have any questions or need further information, please feel free to reach out.

Sincerely,

Elections Canada
