Effective immediately the Sockeye directed food, social, and ceremonial (FSC) gillnet fishery is now open on the Skeena River.
Fishing for sockeye is still closed for recreational fishers.
Run size estimates as of August 1, 2017 have indicated a total return of approximately 630,000 Sockeye.
Skeena River First Nations have decided to open sockeye-directed FSC fishing to a limit of 30,000 fish for the entire Skeena watershed (from coast to the headwaters).
It is CRITICAL that community members report their catch to the Kitsumkalum Fish & Wildlife office – call 250-635-5000 Ext. 110 or to a Fishery Catch Monitor (Bill Bolan or David Nelson), as we must keep track of numbers.
Community members are permitted to fish with their regular sockeye nets and need to have their name and phone number on both ends of their net.
Kitsumkalum Fish & Wildlife food fishermen will begin FSC net fishing for sockeye and will continue on an ongoing basis.
Please call the Kitsumkalum Fish & Wildlife Operations office at 250-635-5000 Ext. 110 if you have any questions, and to report your catch.
