Kitsumkalum Deputy Emergency Program Coordinator

Salary: $75,000 – $80,000 annually

Overview:

The Kitsumkalum Emergency Management Program is seeking a motivated and experienced individual to serve as the Deputy Emergency Program Coordinator. Reporting directly to the Emergency Program Coordinator/Fire Chief, this role will support the overall development and coordination of Kitsumkalum’s emergency preparedness and emergency services.

The Deputy will assist in strengthening local emergency response plans and supporting the establishment of emergency response agreements with nearby municipalities and regional partners.

Key Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Support the Emergency Program Coordinator in all program operations and strategic initiatives.
  • Serve as acting lead for emergency management during the absence of the EPC.
  • Assist in the reestablishment of the Kitsumkalum emergency services.
  • Aid in drafting and negotiating inter-agency emergency response agreements.
  • Update and revise the Kitsumkalum Emergency Plan and supporting documentation.
  • Assist in the coordination of risk assessments, mitigation projects, and evacuation plans.
  • Lead public awareness initiatives, training sessions, and community preparedness efforts.
  • Coordinate equipment and supply procurement and tracking for emergency management.
  • Support the organization of training programs, emergency exercises, and committee meetings.
  • Collaborate with Terrace and Thornhill Fire Departments to strengthen fire and rescue relationships.
  • Manage and promote FireSmart initiatives and deliver annual FireSmart presentations to the community and local schools.
  • Maintain volunteer engagement and support recruitment initiatives.
  • Report quarterly to Chief and Council on emergency program progress and effectiveness.
  • Research and apply for alternative funding sources and partnership opportunities.
  • Actively engage with local and provincial emergency partners and agencies.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • NFPA 1001 Certification (required)
  • Hazmat Awareness & Operations Training (required)
  • Medical Response Training: First Responder or higher (required)
  • Fire Officer I (preferred)
  • 3+ years experience in emergency services or a related industry
  • Experience as a volunteer in fire services or a similar field
  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to lead emergency response operations independently
  • Capable of responding decisively during natural disasters (e.g., floods, wildfires, derailments)
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture; ongoing cultural learning
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trusted working relationships
