Kitsumkalum (also referred to as Gitsm’geelm) is an original Tribe proper of the Tsimshian Nation. As such, Tsimshian Ayaawx (laws) both shape and guide the governance process.

The government model described herein is the hereditary system of governance that has been intrinsic to Tsimshian culture and society, as opposed to the Kitsumkalum Indian Band Government model that fulfils contemporary Band administrative requirements under Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada. The Kitsumkalum hereditary government is one that has been maintained through colonization and exists alongside new western forms of governance. Following Tsimshian governance through the Ayaawx is necessary for proper and long-term management of all Kitsumkalum lands and resources, including the paramount fishery resource. This hereditary system of governance that links the Kitsumkalum people to the land works alongside Band departments dealing with lands and resources.

Kitsumkalum Band Council is elected every two years and consists of seven Councillors and one Chief Councillor faithfully providing its people strong, accountable and effective governance.

Council represents the Kitsumkalum people in all interactions with Canada and is responsible for setting and managing the Nation’s budget. The last election was on February 21, 2019, with the next election scheduled for February 24, 2021 under the current Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada election system. 

Kitsumkalum Band Council welcomes its members to attend Council meetings.

Guidelines for observing Council meetings are:

• Kitsumkalum Band Council meetings are open to Kitsumkalum band membership, with the exception of any “in camera” portion dealing with personnel matters or other sensitive or confidential material
• Kitsumkalum Members are welcome to observe the Council meeting, but cannot engage in Council discussions. Observers are asked to refrain from participating in the meeting or transmitting information to Council members during the  meeting. Along with Council members, observers are asked to mute cell phones and other devices during the meeting ; and
• Kitsumkalum Band Council meetings are a scent free environment. Observers are asked to please refrain from using scented products when attending Council meetings
