Position Summary:
Are you looking for a rewarding role in which you can make a difference in the lives of others? You will perform an array of Traditional Family Circle Coordination practices that focus on collaboration or shared planning and decision-making, describes processes such as Mediation, Family Group Conferencing and Traditional Decision-Making. These processes involve family and community members in child welfare decision-making and produce plans and agreements that protect children and youth and address the needs of families. The use of collaborative decision-making often avoids the need for court involvement. These processes are voluntary and confidential, as described in the Child, Family and Community Service Act.
NIFCS is a First Nations delegated agency that provides a variety of services to seven member Bands from the Haisla and Tsimshian Nation. Services include Voluntary support, Guardianship, Family Group Conference meetings, Caregiver supports, and Youth Agreements. NIFCS works closely with the communities through Community Protocols and groups of dedicated Child Family Teams and Grandmothers groups.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties
- Organize, coordinate, and facilitate Family Circles to support families in making informed, community-driven decisions regarding child welfare, care planning, and family support.
- Ensure that the Family Circle process is voluntary, family-led, and culturally respectful, empowering families to take an active role in decision-making.
- Provide pre-circle preparation and post-circle follow-up, including mediation, facilitation, and support services.
- Work closely with families, extended kin networks, community supports, and service providers to create sustainable plans that prioritize child safety and family unity.
- Advocate for the recognition of traditional dispute resolution and decision-making practices within the Family Circle process.
- Document and track Family Circle outcomes, ensuring compliance with NIFCS and the Child, Family and Community Services Act.
- Ensure that client case files are managed with confidentiality and professionalism. Monitor client progress and ensure timely follow-up and assistance to individuals and families in need of support.
- Work effectively as part of the social services team to foster positive relationships and ensure that client needs are met in a holistic, culturally appropriate manner.
- Promote and raise awareness about NIFCS social programs, services, and initiatives, ensuring that community members are well-informed about available resources.
- Participate in ongoing training to stay informed on best practices in family wellness, social services, and cultural competency.
- Participate in the development and establishment of culturally sensitive services.
- Ensure compliance with Haisla and Tsimshian traditions and the Child, Family and Community Services Act, integrating their principles into all aspects of service delivery.
- Adhere to professionalism at all times and maintain good communications.
- Work as a team member and build positive working relationships.
Basic Qualifications
- All employees of NIFCS are required to submit a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Screening, comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations and all occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
- Further, to work evening and flexible hours and attend cultural awareness training among other training.
- Pursuant to Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to applicants of Aboriginal Ancestry.
Education / Work Experience
- A minimum of a certificate in social services, social work, mediation, or a related field is required.
- 2 years’ experience working in family group facilitation and coordination.
- Strong and demonstrable interpersonal skills
- Strong communication skills both verbal and writing
- Skilled in the use of computers as an administrative and educational tool.
- Aware and knowledgeable in the latest technological tools and programs that have the potential for youth development.
- Ability to keep confidentiality.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certificates
- Professional verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
- Applicants must exercise a high standard of professionalism with sound judgment and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience in coordinating and facilitating workshops and groups.
- Knowledge of Haisla and Tsimshian traditions and the Child, Family and Community Services Act is essential.
- Valid class 5 driver’s license
Working Conditions
- Travel in this position may be required.
- Non-standard hours of work, adjusted schedule.
Compensation & Benefits
- You can expect a supportive work environment, a total compensation package which includes a competitive wage, extended health, and dental benefits.
- This is a Bargaining Unit Position. Hourly wage starting at 27.54/hr
