Kitsumkalum Fisheries Fishwheel Operational Following Full Rebuild
Kitsumkalum Fisheries is proud to announce that the fishwheel at Hells Gate Canyon began fishing today, July 23, 2025, after being completely rebuilt over the past few weeks. This achievement reflects the combined efforts, determination, and collaboration of many individuals and organizations dedicated to salmon stewardship on the Skeena.
We would like to recognize and sincerely thank the following contributors:

Fred Seiler (Silvertip Ecotours) and Mark Neid (Neid Enterprises), for their essential logistical and operational assistance.
Tom Wright, hiyab operator, for his dependable and skilled work during the launching of the fishwheel tower the Kalum River.
Tammy Roberts and Rob Manion, whose coordination and hands-on involvement were vital.
The Nisga’a Fisheries team, who built the new baskets with precision and care.
Russ Bolton and Art Yeomans, who expertly installed the mesh after the baskets were delivered.
Donnie Spalding, Allan Miller, and Mark Marion, for their teamwork in raising the fishwheel tower.
Robert Munroe and Jason Groven, who assisted with the structural construction of the fishwheel.
Corey Bolton and Fred Wesley, whose tireless and at times herculean efforts were pivotal in completing the construction and deployment of the fishwheel into Hells Gate Canyon.
This fishwheel is a cornerstone of selective fishing and monitoring work in the Skeena River and reflects Kitsumkalum’s ongoing commitment to responsible, community-based fisheries management.
